recursive landmark
proposed landmark for DEP
nuclear waste disposal site
This drawing is a 1:1 replica of a single brick from the building depicted in its ornament. The building is also a 1:1 replica - a solid representation of the void below it. Designed for adaptive reuse, this vast monumental complex mirrors the network of nuclear storage compartments below. Etchings of figural scenes and diagrams depict sequestering nuclear waste and casting limestone bricks. Each brick recursively illustrates its own production and purpose in ornamental low relief. In this way, the building explains itself in perpetuity by communicating as a ruin; a structure
understood from a single brick.
